The Sporting Memories Foundation is the world’s first charity dedicated to Sport’s Reminiscence & Physical Activities.
They support older people living in England and Wales with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them in social activities and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport. By sharing memories of sporting moments and tapping into a passion for sport they help people to connect with others and with their past, reawakening positive thoughts and feelings that otherwise remain hidden away.
Using images of sport and memorabilia, older people are assisted to stay connected to their friends and communities, whilst being cognitively stimulated and physically active. The volunteer led, intergenerational Sporting Memories groups help people over the age of 50 remain as healthy as possible.
The Sporting Memories Foundation raise funds to recruit, train and manage more volunteers to help run groups and to expand the number of groups available across England and Wales.
Most groups take place each week and are a friendly, welcoming environment that is open to all. Many of their members attend to enjoy the company of other older sports fans, some of their members live with dementia or have memory problems, some have experienced depression, they may have had a stroke and live with Parkinson’s, but they all have one thing in common, a love for sport!
Donations towards the Sporting Memories Foundation help to keep the clubs running. The clubs always have volunteers or staff present who have been trained by Sporting Memories to lead the sessions which use a wide range of Sporting Memories reminiscence resources developed specifically to help prompt conversation and discussion.
